Hair competition 2015

As some of you may know I am training to become a hairdresser, every year my salon ‘Melanie Giles Hairdressing’ puts on an apprentice competition which allows all 18 apprentices to show off their talents and inspirations in the hairdressing industry.

(My blog for the Melanie Giles website)

This is the second year I have taken part in the competition and after successfully wining the first category last year I felt I had a lot of pressure on me this year!

This time round I was placed in the second year category which is judged on cut and colour.

I wanted to try something really different than usual to make myself stand out, the colour grey is so on trend at the moment and it is extremely hard to create. So therefore I gave myself the challenge.. Which became very stressful.

For the colour I scalp bleached my models hair, then toned it step by step with my grey mixture, and removed when it was the desired colour.

For the cut I created a blunt one length cut, with a transient length (layer), a slight forward graduation and then cut in a undercut.

Finally I styled the hair as an afro, by taking sections of the hair wrapping it around a pin tail comb and heating with the straighteners. (This took a very long time) It was extremely repetitive!!

The makeup I decided to do on my model was very pale skin with dark eyes, a dark purple lip and contoured with a dark colour.

This year the competition was extremely tough as everyone did so well!

However I was so shocked when I was announced as the overall winner! This was a huge achievement for me and I was presented with my award from the amazing Errol Douglas.

My prize is to attend a 2 day course at the Aveda Academy in London! ( so excited!!!!)

Massive thank you to everyone at Melanie Giles and Lucy my stunning model!

Drugstore Lipsticks

GOSH Velvet Touch Lipstick Twilight -£6.99

Rimmel Kate Matte Lipstick Vibrant Coral 110- £5.49

Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick Velvet Beige- £6.99

Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick Pink Blush 6- £4.99

Maybelline ColorSensational Lipstick Pink Punch- £6.99

GOSH Velvet Touch Lipstick Mandarina-£6.99

Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids Shocking Coral- £6.99

Today i have chosen 7 of my favourite drugstore lipsticks. All of them look completely different on and this works well to co-ordinate with outfits, eye makeup and just how you are generally feeling!

‘Twilight’ by GOSH is a lot darker than the rest and you have to be quite daring to wear it. This colour is extremely dark purple and would suit a natural eye makeup.

The most common lipstick i wear is the ‘Pink Blush’ by Rimmel. This colour suits my skin tone and will match any makeup you create as it isn’t too dark.

‘Mandarina’ by GOSH looks amazing when you have a tan, this lipstick has an orange undertone which really suits any brown eyeshadow tones.

‘Vibrant coral’ by Kate Moss is very vibrant red, its not your typical red tone but i wouldn’t personally call it coral as i have other lipsticks which are much closer to the coral tone.

‘Velvet beige’… i call this my velvet teddy- MAC as in my opinion they are quite similar! I’ve been trying to get my hands on velvet teddy for a long time, however this lipstick has been a very good replacement!

‘Pink punch’! this is a purply pink tone and its the second darkest out of my chosen colours. Once again i would apply this lipstick when they eyes are looking more natural!

Finally ‘shocking coral’- the brightest lipstick going! Amazing colour for the summer time as it is very vibrant and goes with pretty much any makeup look 🙂

My favourite eye makeup products feb 2015

I go through products like there’s no tomorrow! I try out as many different brands as I possibly can untill I break the bank. However today I will be talking about a few of my favourites at the moment.

I spend most of my makeup application time on my eyes, as do most girls. You apply all this makeup thinking it shows up really well, then you take a ‘selfie’ and it looks like nothing right!?

Anyway I’ve been experimenting with different makeup brands and these are the ones that work best for me and my skin tone.

Let’s start with the favourite that is MAC.

I have two MAC pigments which I am absolutely loving at the moment. They are ‘vanilla’ and ‘naked’. You can wear these pigments together or separately depending on the look you are going for.

‘Vanilla’ is a lighter tone and very shimmery, I have blue eyes and personally this brings out the colour if you apply it to the inner corner of your eye. I also use this pigment under my brow bone to highlight. This pigment could also be used on your face as a highlighter.

‘Naked’ is a nude shade but also has a slight shimmer to it. It’s a much more natural tone and could be applied all over the eyelid or blended in with other shadows. I like to use ‘naked’ on the eyelid and use a darker tone in the crease to accentuate this pigment.

My favourite eyeshadow brand of all time and I haven’t changed it for years now is… Urban decay naked palettes.

These palletes are so amazing and the pigment in the colours are so good for achieving any look! I have recently bought number 3 and it’s such a lovely day palette for when you want a natural but noticeable eye look. This palette is different to the other two as this one focuses more on the pink tones. My favourite colours from the palette are ‘dust’, ‘limit’ and ‘trick’ for a day look and then ‘liar’, ‘trick’, ‘mugshot’ and ‘blackheart’ for an evening look.

Now my favourite eye liner at the moment is a high street brand, maybelline- master precise liquid liner, as to be honest I don’t think it makes a great difference with products like eye liner and mascara. It has a very fine tip which is perfect for creating the best flick possible. Then moving onto mascara, I have used this product for as long as I can remember inbetween different highstreet brands and this mascara is called ‘great lash’ by maybelline. This mascara never goes clumpy on the lashes and if you apply it layer by layer it builds up long natural looking lashes.
